Storage Tips

Fill boxes to capacity so they don’t tip or collapse.

Store items you will need to access frequently toward the front of your unit.

Pack boxes evenly to capacity. The contents in half-empty boxes can shift during transport or lifting. And the sides can collapse if there’s nothing to support them. Foam peanuts and newspaper are handy for filling in the gaps in boxes.

When stacking boxes, always make sure to put the heaviest boxes at the bottom to avoid damage.

Always seal your boxes.

Store couches on end to save room.

Use furniture covers to protect your items.

Do not store anything flammable.

Take things apart, such as bed frames. It will help with space.

Label boxes on all sides for easy identification.

When storing business files, leave a walkway down the center of your unit to make accessing items easier. Also, it's a good idea for any frequently-used items to be placed near the entrance for easy access.

Purchase a secure, high quality lock. Locaks are available for purchase Nielson's Building Center, 391 Tyee Drive, in Point Roberts, open Monday-Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 10-3.

Prevent scratching of furniture legs by wrapping them in protective bubble wrap.

It's a great idea to have dust covers for your mattresses and furniture.

Always, if possible use cardboard or wooden pallets on the floor of your storage space.

To ensure security of valuable items such as computers or TVs, place them farthest from the door, with other items concealing them.

When storing large appliances:

  • Defrost and clean refrigerators and freezers to avoid water damage and mildew growth.
  • Remove refrigeration/freezer doors or leave them partially open when storing.
  • Make sure washer machines are dry and tie up the hoses before storing.
  • Enclose the exposed back area of refrigerators and washers to prevent vermin.

RV Storage Tips
If you put RV in long-term storage; remove and store the batteries where they will not freeze. In either case keep the batteries charged.

Change the oil and oil filter on the engine and the generator prior to storage. Acids accumulate in used oil and can corrode engine bearings.

Check the engine radiator for the proper concentration of antifreeze. Consult your owner's manual for the correct type of engine antifreeze. Drain, flush and refill the system every two to three years.

Drain the windshield washer reservoir or add the appropriate antifreeze solution to prevent it from freezing.

Close all of the window blinds to avoid sun exposure to the carpet, drapes and upholstery.
